I write in response to the letter last week under the heading: We have enough cameras already.
There has been CCTV in Oakham and Uppingham for a number of years, but the need for an upgrade has become increasingly apparent over the last year.

This upgrade is being considered both in terms of numbers of cameras (so that all hotspots can be covered) and technology.

The current system has been used in police operations and in court and whilst I am not at liberty to discuss specific cases, please be assured that they have proved useful on a number of occasions in both towns, further helping to make our communities better places for the greater community good.

I understand your correspondent's concerns about proportionality.

Rutland Community Safety Partnership invests heavily in the tiered approach to tackling anti-social behaviour, which is about diverting youg people from committing anti-social behaviour and is also committed to restorative justice measures.

CCTV is intended to support that work but also tackle the crime that occurs in town centres such as motor crime, robbery and theft.

Rutland Community Safety Partnership is committed to making Rutland a safer place to live and believes using CCTV (as one of many tools) can help achieve this.

You will be aware that the upgrade will not be implemented unless the public consultaion we are currently conducting is supportive.

Cllr Barrie Roper
Chairman,
Rutland Community Safety Partnership
