May I through your letters page update all the members of the Oakham British Legion as to the current situation where the club is concerned.
A recent combined meeting of the branch and club committees concluded that for a number of reasons, mainly financial, it was highly unlikely or indeed feasible for the club to re-open.

We do appreciate that for many this will be disappointing new
s; although perhaps not unexpected.

I would stress however, that every possible option was explored for ways to remain in some way operational.

Another disappointing aspect is that Pall Mall (British Legion HQ) has made it quite clear that the proposed takeover by the New Legions Clubs is now definitely a non-starter.

That being the case it was considered to be constitutionally correct to invite all members to a special meeting to be held at 8pm on September 17 in the club.

This will give everyone the opportunity to air views, express opinions and ultimataely notify the wishes of the committee.

Needless to say the branch will continue with its charity work aimed primarily for the welfare of service personnel and their families.

It is also the intention of the branch to organise functions and other activities in order to maintain an interest for Legion members.

Roy Rowe
Chairman
Oakham Royal British Legion branch
