As a reluctantly exiled Oakhamian, I am delighted to see, in this winter's mainline railway timetable, that our county town is to have a direct rail link to London and return, for the first time in 42 years.
As of December 14 the 6.15am departure from Oakham will whisk you to St Pancras, with the 6pm from London pulling into Oakham at 7.43pm, ideal times for commuters and for anyone seeking a full day-out in the capital.

As a bonus, these trains travel over the Harringworth viaduct and via Corby.

As ever, though, it will surely be a case of 'use it or lose it', so, Rutlanders, make sure that you get aboard!
