I read the letter from the un-named Oakham trader urging us to support independent shopkeepers.
I found it a little irritating. When will local traders wake up to the idea of fair competition.

Costa will charge a lot for a coffee so why should this concern the independents.

They can sell cheaper cups. After all it only costs about 2p to make a coffee. I personally don't do much shopping in Oakham because most independents have a monopoly and over-charge.

Last week I spoke to an older Oakham resident who travels out of town on organised trips. She was shocked to find most shops out of town are cheaper.

She is a former Oakham independent trader. She bought me some delicious chops from a Newark butcher that cost £1.50, about a third of the Oakham price.

Oakham independent traders need to wake up and smell the coffee!
