I refer to the letter posted in the Rutland Times by Mr Alexander of Ashwell, and the reply posted by Terry King last week in relation of ungritted roads in the county.
While I will not agree with the sarcastic way in which the problem was highlighted by Mr Alexander, I strongly disagree with Mr King's reply.
I appreciate the gritters do a good job, and Mr King being a councillor will support them if there is any
adverse comments they receive.
However, I would ask not just for myself but for all the residents of Uppingham Road, and all the road users of this road the following questions:
a) Where were the gritters on the first day of the heavy snowfall, Friday, December 18? By midday the road had still not been gritted even though it had been snowing since the early hours, and it remained not gritted until later the following day, even though I personally telephoned the emergency number given by the council switchboard that evening.
b) For several days Uppingham Road remained snow and ice covered after each snowfall, again where were the gritters?
On Saturday, January 2, we had a snowfall during the morning which abated during the afternoon, but in the evening returned and left a light covering which started to freeze by 10pm.
During the night we had a further fall of snow and there was a good covering of snow on top of ice on the roads this morning, Sunday, January 3.
At 11am today the road was still covered with snow and ice and motorists were having difficulty controlling their cars even at a low speed in both directions. At 5pm the same day the road was still in the same condition and there was no sign gritters had been. I have photographs to support my comments.
Perhaps Mr King is getting satisfactory treatments in his area, but I am sure there are many residents in the area I have mentioned who will support me on the observations I have raised.
