RUTLANDERS will have the chance to question their MP over the expenses scandal at a public meeting being held on Saturday.
Rutland MP Alan Duncan, who has always maintained he has
nothing to hide, will meet voters face-to-face to answer questions about the expenses system and his own personal claims.
Mr Duncan came under fire when the Daily Telegraph revealed he had claimed more than £4,000 on gardening bills. He has since promised to repay the cash.
The Tory MP said: "At a time of such turmoil it's important that people have access to their MP. I have always made myself available but people have said they want a meeting sooner rather than later so I'm trying to meet their request.
"I'm more than happy to be holding this meeting and people are welcome to say whatever they think.
"It's important for us to keep in touch with our constituents."
The meeting is at Victoria Hall in High Street, Oakham, at 10am and is open to the public.
Depending on the turnout Mr Duncan will either make a speech and host a formal question and answer session or chat to people individually when they drop in.
He hopes to hold more meetings during the summer to reach as many people as possible in the constituency.
Leader of Rutland County Council, Roger Begy (Con), welcomed the meeting, saying: "The public feels very strongly about this issue of expenses and I welcome the opportunity for the local MP to speak to us and to hear what he has to say."
The nation's MPs have been heavily criticised since the Daily Telegraph started to reveal exact details of their
expenses claims.
Among a host of shock claims, these showed MPs had sought payments for toilet seats, a duck house, moat cleaning and dog food and mortgage payments on debatable second homes
Last month the Telegraph revealed Mr Duncan had claimed more than £4,000 over three years for gardening bills, including £598 for a ride-on lawnmower overhaul and £41 for repairing a puncture. Mr Duncan, who has a property at Thorpe-by-Water, promised to repay the £4,704.86 he claimed between 2004 and 2008.
