New CCTV cameras could be installed in Oakham and Uppingham by Christmas.
It will double the number of cameras in both towns and improve coverage and the quality of images captured.

The internet based system was approved by councillors who were told there was widespread public support for an upgrade.

A public consultation showed 70 per cent of respondents in favour of CCTV being used to reduce crime and anti social behaviour.

The four digital cameras for each town, along with radio, recording and other equipmentwill costs £66,000.

Existing CCTV cameras will not be discarded but made available to parishes throughout Rutland who may want to monitor anti social hotspots.
