More CCTV cameras planned for towns
New CCTV cameras could be installed on the streets of Oakham and Uppingham.
A safety group is considering upgrading the current systems in the town to be able to get clearer pictures of what's going on.
There are currently two fixed cameras in each town.
The plan is for a further two new ones in each town so more areas can be covered with improved picture quality.
They will be fixed cameras but would be able to be moved to crime hotspots if needed.
Barrie Roper, chairman of the Community Safety Partnership behind the plans, said: "The new CCTV would assist in combating antisocial behaviour as well as picking up car registration plates of drivers flouting the rules.
"These cameras wouldn't be to spy on people, but for a serious purpose of maintaining a safe community."
Money to pay for the systems, which would be monitored at peak times, is available from the police, the safety partnership and contributions from developers in the town.
Inspector Sarah Cox, of Rutland police, has backed the plans.
She said: "The new enhanced system would provide a better level of definition in the images to aid prosecution because at times the current refinement has been frustrating and doesn't always offer the definition required for prosecution."
Residents are being asked for their views before a final decision is made. Add your comments on-line at www.rutland.gov.uk
