Mother Goose, line dancing and movies could all be staged at Rutland County Museum if a proposal to expand the use of the historic building is approved.
The Live@The Museum pilot scheme with five live performances that included entertainment from comedian Barry Cryer and wildlife expert Chris Packham during the summer was a huge success.

Now the council wants to build on this by staging more ente
rtainment to include plays, live music, recorded music, and dancing.

If a licence application is successful, the museum would be able to hold events between 10.30am and 11pm seven days a week and sell alcohol.

One or two events could be held before Christmas and entertainment would run all through 2009.

Councillor Peter Jones, (Con) cabinet portfolio holder for culture said: "The five trial events were a great success. Our intention is to build up a full programme for the coming year to provide a variety of entertainment for residents and visitors alike.

"We are particularly trying to find out what to do to get the younger families out."

Organisers are keen to get the views of the public and are particularly interested in the 20-35 age group, to find out what would get them out on a Saturday night.

Councillor Jones insisted that increasing the entertainment available did not mean the end of Rutland County Museum. He said: "It still must be a museum.

"The other thing will not take over but will be complementary."
