Simon Richards took on the challenge to raise money for Diabetes UK because his daughter and mum both suffer from the illness.

He took his place among 38,000 runners and was thrilled to reach the finishing line. he finished the course in five-and-a-half hours

Simon, 37, of Hector's Way, Oakham, said: "It was very competitive.

"No matter what people say about just doing it for the charity, which is what it's all about really, you get loads of Brits and Americans saying 'I did a personal best today' and then looking all smug.

"It was a bit demoralising to be honest – you are kind of entering a world where you feel you don't quite belong."

The first 12 miles passed without a hitch and then Simon's motivation came from the thought of meeting his wife Caroline at the 17-mile mark. But after that he had to stop a couple of times for medical attention on his calves.

He said: "It was a fantastic experience and if it wasn't for my mind playing tricks on me at about 18 miles I could have gone quicker. To anyone who says they couldn't do it, they are wrong because they could.

"You get the people who can just rock up and finish it in four-and-a-half hours. I've cut the booze, don't smoke and am on the right side of 40 – then you get the 40-something sporty mum who's just done a personal best. It's not fair!"

The route took competitors through five boroughs of New York where the streets were lined with supporters.

Simon, who runs Osprey Catering at Rutland Sailing Club, said: "I have loads of great memories.

"I even managed to sprint the last 0.2 miles and the overriding sense of achievement was fantastic.

"Thanks must go to all who supported me especially my friends and family."
