Thieves target 4x4 owners

Criminals are targeting owers of four-wheel-drive vehicles in Rutland.

In the latest inclident, a blue Range Rover worth £23,000 was stolen from Main Street, Greetham.

The owner had been shopping in Tesco in Oakham and got out of the vehicle to unlock the gates to his driveway when someone jumped into the car and dr
ove off.

It was later found dumped in Derbyshire. Police believe the man had been watched and followed home at around 5.45pm.

Sergeant Helen Lodge said: "This is quite similar to a theft on November 3 when a car was stolen. The man had travelled from Uppingham to Barrowden and the car, his trailer and pet dog were stolen while he got out to check a parking space."

Witnesses should contact Pc 498 Andy King on (0116) 222 2222.

A blue Land Rover Defender was taken from Empingham Road in Stamford on Tuesday morning at 10.20am. The vehicle, worth £15,000, had its anti theft lock removed and the ignition was tampered with to start the engine.

Drivers in Langham have been experiencing a spate of car crime since the start of the month.

Four incidents of damaged cars have been reported since the start of November, costing up to £2,000 to repair.

The latest incident happened overnight on Saturday in Burley Road when a red Ford Focus was scratched and dented, costing £200 to repair.

Earlier in the month a car parked at The Wheatsheaf was scratched causing £2,000 of damage as well as a Toyota in Burley Road costing £1,000 to fix and a number plate being stolen in Orchard Road.
