Buying local food is good for the economy
FARMERS and livestock producers in the East Midlands bring in £2.24 billion a year through sales.
The industry also employs 33,280 people across the region according to figures released by Department for Farming and Rural Affairs this week, but the numbers only account for a very small percentage in the county and more needs to be done to buy locally.
Andrew Brown, who is the regional chairman for the National Farmers’ Union and who farms in Caldecott said: “This part of the country is renowned for its beautiful scenery, but Rutland wouldn’t look like it does without the centuries of care by farmers and their families.
“Farming delivers safe, affordable food to high standards of welfare and environmental care for our customers and it’s the support of consumers that we value: if you buy both local and British food, you’re supporting not just the farming community, but a wide and important network of ancillary businesses.
“Economically, farming is the root of a vast and valuable food chain and by buying more British food, you’re helping to achieve the country’s goals of greater food security and economic growth.”
