A NEW hair salon has opened in a thriving village store.

Limelights hair salon has opened in the annex of the Mace Store in Whissendine after demand from villagers prompted store owner Ram Odera to reassess how he used his space.

He said: “I was thinking of turning it into an office but that would have had no benefit for the village.

“My first idea was a fish and chip shop but I have had a lot of mums and people in the village saying that they needed a hair salon.

“They were having to go into Melton or Oakham and that was costing a lot of money.”

After doing a lot of research on the business side of the hair industry Ram employed salon manager Annette Griffin to take charge. He said: “We have kitted it all out properly and it has created three jobs in the village.”

The shop opened on Monday with a blessing from the church and the first customers started to arrive yesterday.

First in line was parish councillor Jane Reynolds of Harborough Close, Whissendine who took her mother and sister to the salon with her for a morning out.

She said: “We were joking that the salon will become like the film Steel Magnolias and everyone will come along for their gossip and a hair cut.

“My hair looks excellent. It is very exciting to have something like this in the village to take care of everyone’s needs!

“It will be a great way to get to know the neighbours and it is right next to the school.”

Ram took over the premises last year and opened to Mace Store to help the village after it had its shop and post office closed.

He said: “I have listened to what people in the village wanted and I hope it will help them.

“So far it has been busy continuously and I hope people will make the most of it being here. I am preying that it works.”

Coun Reynolds added: “It is great to have something opening in the village rather than closing.”
