Oakham driver victim of distraction theft

POLICE in Rutland are appealing for witnesses to a theft in Ashwell Road, Oakham, on Friday.

The incident happened at 2.15pm near the Burley Road junction.

A woman motorist stopped at the second pedestrian crossing to let a cyclist cross the road.

The cyclist appeared to fall off his bike on the crossing and the driver got out of her vehicle to assist him.

She had just left her vehicle when a second man approached it and stole a black bag containing cash and a red purse from the car.

The cyclist then got up and travelled down Ashwell Road towards Oakham bypass and the second suspect ran off towards Burley Road.

The 52-year-old victim was not hurt during the incident.

Both suspects have been described as white and in their teens.

The second one was of slim build and was wearing a dark grey hooded top, jeans and dirty white trainers.

Sgt Steff Shellard from Oakham police station said: “This was a frightening incident for the victim, she thought she was helping the cyclist who it is believed deliberately distracted her so his assailant could steal the items from the car.

“Luckily the victim wasn’t threatened nor were any weapons seen, however we would like to make the public aware and warn them to be cautious if they are faced with a similar situation.

“If you witnessed the incident or saw two men making off from the area please contact the police as soon as possible. If you have any suspicions about who may be responsible we would urge you to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Sgt 1554 Shellard on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
