A drive to raise £250,000 to modernise a community centre was launched with the help of a Baroness who visited for a tour.
Members of Ketton Sports and Community Centre, formerly known as Ketton Sports Association, were delighted to welcome Baroness Smith of Newnham (Lib Dem), to their premises at Pit Lane, Ketton on Thursday, April 9.
Baroness Smith enjoyed a tour of the existing facilities and discussed the current fundraising being undertaken to raise in excess of £250,000 to modernise the existing facilities.
This will include refurbishing the indoor sports area including lifting the ceiling height, meeting room and kitchen, as well as moving the bar so that a function area can be created.
The highlight of the Baroness’ visit, was a presentation from Ron Tilley, founding member of the Ketton Healthy Walking Group and other club members, who have purchased a defibrillator, which was donated to the centre and which Baroness Newnham accepted on behalf of the centre.
The centre is no longer a members only club, and was granted charity status in January with the aim of turning it into a “fantastic community facility for Ketton and the surrounding area”.
Trustee Kellie Charge said: “We want to create a space that will prove accessible and usable for the whole community.”
So far, trustees have received a grant from Rutland County Council for more than £14,000 and a £10,000 pledge from Ketton Parish Council. Further applications for grants have also been submitted and fundraising events are also planned, with a view to starting work early next year.
A logo competition was also recently held with Ketton School and the winning design was chosen by the Whitebread Trust. The new logo, designed by Chloe Fogg, will be featured on literature and staff attire.
Ketton Sports and Community Centre trustees are keen for visitors to view the plans for the proposed redevelopment at the centre.
The current activities held at the club include senior and junior football, petanque, tennis, cricket, bowls and indoor activities including aerobics.
