Almost all new school starters in Rutland have been offered a place at one of their preferred schools, following the county’s latest round of primary admissions.

Ahead of this year’s National Offer Day today (Monday, April 18), Rutland County Council received and processed 356 applications from residents for September 2016 primary school admissions.

Of those who applied, 353 (99.2 per cent) were offered places at either their first, second or third choice school.

A total of 332 children (93 per cent) were offered their first choice, 20 (six per cent) were offered their second choice and 1 (0.2 per cent) was offered their third choice. Just three residents had no preference met but received an alternative offer, instead.

Portfolio holder for lifelong learning David Wilby (Con) said: “Rutland continues to perform well when it comes to satisfaction rates for primary school admissions, which is great news for parents and carers. This year, we’ve seen a slight increase in the number of children being offered a place at one of their preferred schools, while the percentage of Rutland children being offered their first choice is well above the national average.

“The council is working closely with schools to ensure we have enough primary school places to meet demand in the county – both now and in years to come. Primary school capacity in Rutland has increased since the last round of admissions in 2015, while planning continues for a new 210-place primary school in Oakham.”

Parents and carers have 14 days to confirm if they wish to accept or decline the place they have been offered for September 2016. Details of how to respond are included in the offer email or letter, while more information about school admissions is available online at: www.rutland.gov.uk/education_and_learning.aspx
