More than 80 of Oakham School’s youngest pupils took on the role of ‘buccaneers’ and set off into the countryside for three days of adventures and problem-solving, all in the name of developing their learning skills outside the classroom.

The Exploring Learning Camp is now in its second year, and aims to challenge pupils to develop their learning habits.

Pupils are encouraged to engage, be proactive and persevere when faced with various tasks, no matter how difficult they might seem.

The objective behind this is that in putting these habits into practice outside the classroom, pupils will have a deeper understanding of how to apply them inside the classroom and beyond.

Teachers invited pupils to work things out independently from the very beginning, even leaving them to decide what they should pack!

Additionally, the pupils were split into teams and spent an afternoon planning how to tackle the challenges ahead.

On arriving at the camp on Thursday, pupils were taught how to set up tents, collect firewood and cook a meal on a portable stove.

The next day, the buccaneers had a wide range of activities that they could choose to take part in.

This included fire-making, canoeing, tent-building, rock-climbing and cooking, which would enable pupils to complete various tasks, such as coercing information out of the wise old man on the island.

Pupils coped with the challenges admirably, many conquering their fear of heights on the climbing wall, or bravely paddling across a stretch of water for the very first time.

The pupils will now have a chance to reflect on what they learnt at the camp, from how they overcame the various challenges, to which learning habits they excelled at (or which ones they might need to work on).

Pupils will also be encouraged to apply the habits of engaging, being proactive and persevering in their lessons, to help them to solve problems by themselves and improve their independent learning skills.
