Volunteers wanted for Rutland Water “bioblitz”

A TEAM of wildlife enthusiasts will be attempting to record 1,000 different species at Rutland Water Nature Reserve this weekend.

The 24 hour “Bioblitz” organised by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust will begin at 7pm on Friday and run until 7pm on Saturday. In that period the team at Rutland Water will record as many different species of wildlife as possible.

Reserve manager Tim Appleton said: “We hope that the Bioblitz will demonstrate what a great place Rutland Water is for wildlife. The reserve is rightly famous for its birdlife, but it is home to an incredible array of other species too.

“We’ll be recording everything that flies, creeps and crawls.”

The team at Rutland Water have enlisted help from a range of different experts to help.

Bioblitz organiser Tim Mackrill said: “If we are going to get close to our target, it is important that we record as many different species as possible.

“We have lined up a team of specialists who will be able to record everything from lichens to hoverflies and bats to butterflies.

“However, it’s not just for the experts. Anybody can turn up and join in and there will be plenty of people on hand to give advice and support.”

In addition to the scientific recording, the trust has arranged a series of public events through the day at the Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre at Egleton. There will be children’s activities as well as a full programme of guided walks. Tim Mackrill said: “We hope that the Bioblitz will inspire people to take more of an interest in the wildlife around them.”
