BREAKING NEWS: Sainsbury’s announces new plans for Oakham
SAINSBURY’S has confirmed it plans to build a supermarket on the Rutland County College site in Oakham, creating 250 jobs.
The proposals will go on show for a two-day public consultation at the college in Barleythorpe Road on Friday and Saturday next week.
The supermarket chain previously applied to build a store in Lands’ End Way but was turned down by Rutland County Council.
A Sainsbury’s spokesman said it remained hopeful of opening a store in the town.
Sainsbury’s development executive Robert Oxley said: “We received high levels of public support for a store previously and have been committed to finding a way to bring a Sainsbury’s to Oakham. “I am conscious that the community has been waiting for us to announce our plans for some time now.”
The previous plans were turned down because the Lands’ End Way site was allocated as employment land, not retail, and planners said sites closer to the town centre would be more suitable.
The proposed store would be slightly smaller than in the previous plan and will not include a petrol station.
It would have a 260-space car park, cash machine and a recycling centre. The store would stock some non-food items and have a bakery, fresh food counters and a cafe.
Leaflets will be distributed to homes in the area and will be available at the exhibition to encourage feedback.
Mr Oxley said: “We believe that our new proposals will still offer more choice for those doing their weekly food shopping in Oakham, whilst encouraging local people to remain in the town for more of their shopping trips, saving travel time and fuel costs.”
The public consultation will be held at Rutland County College on the Friday from 1pm to 7pm and Saturday from 10am to 2pm.
Rutland County College will open at its new site in Barleythorpe next month.
The college’s current site is owned by Tresham College of Further and Higher Education and has been sold to Aborfield Estates in association with Sainsbury’s. Waitrose had originally hoped to take over the site but negotiations broke down.
