Daniel plans Asian trip of a lifetime

A Rutland man is combining his interests with the challenge of a lifetime to raise money for a charity in Mongolia.

Daniel Avery (20) from Oakham plans to travels across Europe to Mongolia in a 1 litre engine car to raise money to support rural communities in central Asia. Daniel is going with his friend Chris Durritt and thinks the trek will take just over a month.

He said: "We begin in Hyde park on July 19. Our route will take us through France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

"I'm intrigued by Kazakhstan and Mongolia. They are both relatively untouched, with very little infrastructure. Many Mongolians still live a nomadic lifestyle, using horses as transport. This will be a huge contrast to the life we're used to in the West. Sweden will be good fun as we hope to fit in some great sights and try out the nightlife."

When the boys reach their destination, the car is auctioned to raise more money for the charity. Daniel added: "Having a small engined car adds to the fun.

"If you have a small car you can run into all sorts of mishaps. We're looking at buying an old Volks Wagen Beetle or something quirky.

"We're looking at cars at the moment and writing letters to companies. We have been chatting about it a lot and it's starting to pull together. We would like sponsorship from big corporations and then would have photos of us in each of the countries with the product."

Daniel is hoping they will raise over 1,000 before they go on the trek and is already finding out there is hidden costs.

He said: "I had a bit of a shock when I went to the travel nurse about vaccinations for the trip. They will cost around 250 in total which is a huge hidden cost we hadn't considered."

To sponsor them visit www.willwemakeit.com/fundraiser/arrr_taste where you will also find out more about the trip and the boys will keep you up to date with their preparations.
