Flower power at Chelsea show

Three local garden experts have won awards at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Adam Frost, of New Ground Landscapes in Essendine, hoped to match last year's success where he clinched a gold award in his first ever appearance at the show. And he did it.

But this year he went one better and not only claimed another gold award for his design, A Welcome Sight, but also won the award for the best urban garden in the show.

Adam (38) was delighted with the success of his team.

He said: "I wanted to design a garden that would not only welcome you home and make you smile but also make you want to sit and socialise with your neighbours and hopefully, by doing this, add something to our ever-declining sense of community."

The design was intended to show people how their front gardens can be as stunning and useable as back gardens. Large cubed hedges were used to give structure and water features were added to give the design movement and sound.

Sue Hamilton and her team from Barnsdale Gardens walked away with a silver flora for her cottage garden plants which were on show in the Grand Floral Pavilion.

The team's winning design was entitled 'Ancient and Modern' and featured traditional cottage garden favourites planted around three ultra modern sculptures by artist blacksmith Jenny Pickford.

Sue said: "To get an award at the oldest and most prestigious flower show in the world is just fantastic."

Oakham based garden designer Ian Dexter was awarded a silver medal at the show.

It was the first time Ian (37) has taken part in the show, and his garden, which was designed to get children away from their computer games and back outside was a huge hit with adults and children alike.

He said: "I went to lots of schools around the country and asked them to design their ideal gardens. I then took recurring themes in the gardens and put them into my design.

"As it was designed for older children there were a lot of fantastical creatures such as snakes."

Ian studied at Vale of Catmose College, and then went onto do a degree in garden design at Brackenhurst College, Nottingham.

He said: "To win a silver award at Chelsea was amazing. It was such a hard slog in terms of building and designing and it was emotionally and physically demanding.
