SCORES of Rutlanders were at Burghley House near Stamford yesterday for a visit by the Queen.

The Queen flew in to Burghley by helicopter for the event hosted by the Lord Lieutenants of Rutland, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire.

The Queen was presented with a book on the history of Rutland Water and a sculpture by Mo Gardner from Morcott during the visit.

The Heritage of Rutland Water was compiled the Rutland Local History and Record Society in 2007 and edited by Robert Ovens and Sheila Sleath.

The book was presented in front of the Rutland marquee by the president of Rutland Local History and Record Society Edward Baines when he was presented to the Queen.

The copy presented had been bound in green leather and embossed with the society’s shield with a special inscription inside to commemorate the occasion.

On Monday, Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Laurence Howard visited Brooke Hill Primary School to take part in their assembly and talk to them about his role of representing the Queen.

He explained his uniform and showed them his ceremonial sword.

He then asked them question about the royal family and tested their knowledge of who is who.

Deputy headteacher Jane Fitzgerald said: “The children loved it and we were all very pleased with how much they knew about the royal family.”

The children also showed Dr Howard the horseshoe that they had decorated and which he took to the Queen’s visit at Burghley House yesterday. Year 6 children from the school were invited to attend.

Mrs Fitzgerald said: “They were very excited.”
