Sarah Outen forced to postpone solo row across Pacific Ocean
ROUND-THE-WORLD adventurer Sarah Outen has had to postpone here solo rowing effort from Japan to Canada because of strong gales.
She was due to leave tomorrow (Sunday), having already postponed the launch once.
Severe weather is now likely to strike in the Pacific Ocean 36 hours after the time when she had planned to depart.
In a blog post today Sarah, a former Stamford School pupil from Oakham, said: “With just hours to go until launching, it was with a heavy heart that one hour ago my weather router Lee and I decided to stand down and not launch tomorrow morning.
“A strong gale which had previously been forecast to blow itself out to the south of me, is now forecast to blow right over the top and out along my proposed trajectory.
“It is not sensible or safe to launch into rough conditions so close to leaving shore. We know that I will face conditions like that on my voyage, but to knowingly row into them so early on would be foolish and unsafe.”
She said the weather is likely to remain unsuitable for the launch until Saturday next week (May 5).
Sarah has already cycled and kayaked 11,000 miles from London to Choshi in Japan as part of her challenge, London to London Via the World. She left the UK on April 1, 2011 to take on the two-year challenge.
Sarah will be at sea for 150 to 200 days. She will then cycle across Canada and row the Atlantic Ocean before cycling and kayaking back to London.
