A PETROL station in Oakham had to close this morning after staff discovered their own large sign had been placed on the canopy of the service station overnight.

The Texaco petrol station in Melton Road was closed until 11.15am until the sign, which measures 6ft by 3ft and normally sits on the forecourt advertising cut prices, could be removed.

Police said CCTV footage has revealed the sign was put on the roof by two people around 12.30am.

One of them was wearing a motorcycle helmet.

Police are appealing for witnesses, including anyone who may have seen a motorcycle in the area at that time.

Anyone with information should contact PCSO Nicole Welsh at Oakham Police Station on 0116 2484711 or contact police on 101.
