A super slimmer is celebrating after shedding 10 stone 4.5lbs and being named Oakham’s Slimming World Greatest Loser 2015.
Barry Palmer won the title, which is awarded to the member of the Oakham Slimming World group who has lost the most weight, and says his life has changed.
“I feel like a new man since losing weight – in fact, I look so different that people who I haven’t seen for a while often can’t believe I’m the same person.
“For me though it’s the change on the inside that’s been the biggest – I’m happier, healthier and much more confident now,” he said.
This is just the latest accolade for Barry, who was featured in the Mercury in November after being crowned winner of the group’s Mr Sleek competition - an article which prompted more men to join the group.
The proud 64-year-old weighed 23 stone 11.5lbs when he joined the Oakham group, run by Sheryl Kearney in March 2014 and has since dropped to his target weight of 13 stone 7lbs.
He heard about Slimming World from his daughter Sheridan, who has lost six stone herself, and was determined to lose weight as it was putting a strain on his health. Barry said he was nervous and embarrassed about joining Slimming World but says he’s never felt like he was on a diet.
Now Barry has lost a total of 10st 4.5lbs to get to his target weight, and has gone from a 54 inch to a 36 inch waist and a top size 5XL to M/L. He’s also more active nowadays and regularly goes to the gym, and enjoys swimming too.
Each of Slimming World’s 12,000 groups in the UK and Ireland has its own Greatest Loser 2015 and winners go forward to the national competition. Barry is now waiting to find out if he’s in the running for the £3,000 prize. He said: “I would love to win but I didn’t lose weight to win a competition, I wanted to feel healthier and better about myself and I’ve definitely done that. I feel great and that’s priceless.”
