PEOPLE gathered to sing hymns at the Town Mayor’s civic service and reception last Thursday.

Mayor of Oakham Coun Joyce Lucas held her service at Oakham Methodist Church in Northgate and Oakham Castle.

Guests from across Rutland attended the service which was arranged to reflect the Mayor’s life and included a number of hymns.

The service began with the Rutland Jubilee Hymn, sung by the Rutland Choral Society. It was composed by Neville Favell, with words from the Mayor, and readings were spoken by the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Laurance Howard. The organist for the service was Roger Rowell.

After the service, guests were entertained at Oakham Castle where the Mayor gave her speech, in which she paid tribute to the community of Oakham. The Mayor also gave her Volunteer of the Year Award to Angie Humphreys.

A collection was held in aid of the British Legion, which raised almost £300.

Mayor Coun Lucas said: “It has been a wonderful day for me, my family and the town.”
