A group of councillors and community representatives will begin work on a neighbourhood plan for Oakham in the new year.

A steering group set up by Oakham Town Council will start the long process of forming the document that will help guide future development in the area.

The council invited feedback on two consultation days earlier this year, and aims to include the community’s views in the plan.

Mayor of Oakham Alf Dewis said: “The plan will be part of the statutory development plan for the town and give far more weight to the views of the community in any development. It will be about the use and development of land and contain planning policies, proposals for improving the area, the provision of new facilities or allocation of key sites for specific kinds of development. It will also deal with social issues i.e. housing, employment, heritage and transport which are relevant to Oakham.”

The plan is likely to take two to three years to finalise, after which it will go through a consultation process with the residents of the town before being forwarded to Rutland County Council for inspection.
