Punters at the London Inn in Stamford gathered in anticipation on Monday to watch Tom Roberts take on the 72oz steak challenge on his 20th birthday.
A feast of food including a 72oz steak, 15 onion rings, six eggs and a kilo of chips was the monster challenge Tom faced as part of his birthday celebrations.
There is no way I would’ve been able to complete that challenge - the steaks even bigger than me!Tom’s friend, Richie Houston
Tom, from Stamford had just 40 minutes to devour the whole steak and each of the sides and although the room was filled with people shouting words of encouragement, Tom cracked amongst the pressure and couldn’t quite finish the steak in time.
Tom’s friend, Richie Houston was there on the day to offer his support, he said: “If he had just an extra 15 minutes he would have eaten it all. He did really well, there is no way I would’ve been able to complete that challenge - the steaks even bigger than me!”
Although Tom didn’t complete the challenge in the allotted time, he still managed to raise a total of £150 for Cancer Research UK, a total which has now been doubled by a generous donation from the owners of the London Inn pub who wanted to match Tom’s fundraising efforts.
Owner of the London Inn pub, Nick Pispolas said: “He almost completed it, there was only about one fifth left of the steak - so he almost won the challenge. It was a great atmosphere on the day. Lots of people turned out to cheer Tom on.”
After the monster meal, Tom amazingly still had room for a desert and finished it off with a bowl of ice-cream. Followed by another birthday tea, this time sandwiches and cakes at The Crown, organised by his friends and family.
Since Tom’s efforts the pub has received a number of requests from fellow punters wanting to take on the steak challenge themselves, including a group of footballers from Peterborough.
