After tragically losing their mum to cancer in October 2014, three siblings decided to raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough, where their mum was cared for in her last few weeks.
Since the start of their fundraising journey, James, 13, Dylan, nine, and Megan, seven, have managed to raise nearly £3,000 in memory of their mum, Michelle Beniston. The money has been raised from a number of fundraising activities organised by the siblings, including their most recent cycle challenge which they completed at Rutland Water.
Joined by their friends and family, the trio donned their cycle helmets and took to the saddle for a 17 mile cycle around Rutland Water on Saturday last week.
With a huge amount of support behind them, all three of the children crossed the finish line, followed by their fellow cyclists who included James and Dylan’s dad, Paul and stepmum, Leah, Megan’s dad, Shaun and his two step-sons, family friend Louise Mohammed and Michelle’s brother and his wife.
Rutland Cycling at Whitwell allowed James, Dylan and Megan to hire their bikes and helmets free-of-charge, meaning the money they’d intended for the hire was added to their donation buckets.
Following the bike ride, the families joined together by the water and let off 12 red balloons in memory of Michelle.
Leah Meeks, James and Dylan’s stepmum, said: “It was an emotional and overwhelming day, but one enjoyed by all.
“The boys raised £140 in donations from the villagers in Exton, £100 on the online sponsor page, and £350 from collection tins and buckets, along with Megan who raised more than £350.”
James, who kick started the fundraising at his school, Casterton and Business Enterprise, said: “It was a really fun day for us all, although we were very tired after the cycle ride.
“I’m really pleased with how much we’ve raised and I’d like to thank everyone for their donations.”
