Drivers have been warned to expect delays next week as repairs are carried out on several Rutland roads.

Rutland County Council will begin surface dressing work on Monday. Crews will work at up to five locations per day to try to finish the repairs as quickly as possible. Work is due to finish on Thursday, weather permitting.

Director for places Dave Brown said: “Rutland has some of the best rural roads anywhere in the country, precisely because we carry out regular maintenance work of this kind.

“Although there may be some temporary inconvenience to motorists, surface dressing is the most cost-effective way of preserving the county’s road network and does so by adding a protective layer to the highway. This in turn stops water from penetrating the surface – something that can reduce the life of the road and causes potholes.

“While some local authorities have cut their surface dressing budgets to make short-term savings, Rutland has maintained its investment in this area as the most efficient long-term solution to road maintenance.”

Some sites, such as the A47, will operate under convoy – working at reduced speeds – while other roads will need to be closed for several hours while they are treated.

Following the surface dressing there will be reduced advisory speed limits due to loose chippings and road markings will be absent.

A full 24 hours after the treatment, contractors will sweep the treated roads to remove the majority of loose chippings for recycling.

Reduced speed limits and advisory signs will stay in place until any remaining chippings have bedded in and white lines have been replaced. This phase is partly dependent upon traffic but can take up to several weeks.
