ATHLETICS: Medal glory for Rutland athlete in English schools' championships
There was medal glory for a Rutland shot putter but disappointment for two other county athletes at last weekend's prestigious English Schools' Athletics Championships.
Oakham School student Robert Mohan won a bronze medal in the senior boys' shot when he shattered his personal best with a throw of 15.11 metres at the Gateshead Stadium.
Robert (17), who broke the school record for a fourth time, was only 52cm off winning a silver medal but the competiton was dominated by Essex pupil Devon Douglas, who launched his shot 16.35m.
Iain Simpson, director of sport at Oakham School, said: "Robert is a real prospect in the shot put. He is a big, strong lad but not as enormous as some of the boys who compete against him."
Highly-rated Sarah-Anne de Kremer, who is also studying at Oakham, missed out on completing a hat-trick of gold medals in the javelin.
Sarah-Anne, who won gold at the previous two English schools' games and who has been earmarked as a Great Britain medal prospect at the 2012 London Olympics, had to pull out of this year's senior girls' event with an elbow injury after just three throws and ended up seventh.
The 17-year-old's best throw of 36.14m was more than eight metres down on her personal best in a competition won by Hertfordshire girl Peta Lungren in 43.00m.
Sarah-Anne said: "The injury had been troubling me before the championships and I have had a lot of physiotherapy.
"It was just too painful to continue and I had to pull out at the halfway stage. It is disappointing not to have been able to win my third gold but I need to rest the injury now. I probably won't compete anymore this season."
Sarah-Anne's injury stopped her competing at the weekend's GB Olympic trials at Birmingham.
Uppingham Community College pupil Harry Hollis also endured disappointment at the weekend when he finished down in 12th place in the intermediate boys' javelin.
The 16-year-old is the reigning England under 17 javelin champion and was English schools' winner in 2006 but this year he could only throw 46.22m, 17 metres down on his personal best and well adrift of champion Matti Mortimer (Suffolk), who threw 61.45m.
