CRICKET: Langham win Rutland primary schools tournament
More than 500 Rutland primary schoolchildren have played cricket over the past five weeks as part of a national scheme to get more youngsters interested in the game.
Pupils benefited from a total of 280 hours of coaching during the summer term in curriculum time, as well as playing a round robin of matches against each other at Oakham Cricket Club's Lime Kilns ground.
Langham emerged as champions with English Martyrs runners-up. Other schools who took part were Brooke Hill, Southfields, Whissendine and the Church of England in Oakham.
It was all part of the England and Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) 'Chance to Shine' programme and featured coaches from the Oakham club.
Gordon Hubbard, the club's administrator for the five-year scheme, said: "The children have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and have been very keen to take part. The teachers should be complimented on their enthusiasm and support in helping with the programme.
"It has given the coaches immense pleasure to see the children participating in sport and enjoying the experience of playing cricket and healthy exercise. Feedback from the schools has been tremendous with nothing but praise for the concept and its execution.
"Everyone, from coaches to teachers and the children, are looking forward to next summer when it starts all over again."
