CRICKET: Skipper baffled by Oakham's lack of form

Oakham skipper Chris Larsen confessed to being bewildered by his side's continued lack of form as they slumped to a hefty home defeat to league leaders Grantham.
The team is at a low ebb admits the captain, who suffered a duck in a five wicket defeat.

But the reason for the side's discomfort is baffling.

Larsen said: "I am bewlidered why we should be in this position, given the quality of the players
we have, but it's just not coming together at the moment."

Oakham won the toss but lost three quick wickets.

Sam Wills chipped in with a fine 50, but there was no real support from the rest of the batsmen and they were skittled out for 111 in just 30 overs.

It was an especially frustrating afternoon for bowlers Harry Taylor and James Pepperdine, who both performed well.

Had the batsmen made another 70 or so, Oakham could have been in with a shout because Grantham lost five wickets before they reached the target with 15 overs to spare.

Larsen will be hoping for a change in fortunes this weekend against Boston, who also suffered a defeat on Saturday.

He said: "They will be looking to bounce back against us, but if we can get a result then we could get back on course.

"We started this season as serious contenders after finishing second last year, but the standard has moved up and the competition is the most evenly matched I have known since I have been here.
"We just need to start making some runs."
