A sizeable crowd at Oakham Cricket Club watched Uppingham Town Under 13s lift the Druce Shield with a thrilling cup final victory over Bourne on Saturday afternoon.
Bourne won the toss and put the Rutlanders into bat. Town openers Callum O'Berg and Tom Roberts looked assured as they quickly started to pick off early boundaries, taking the score to 21 off the first three overs.
O'Berg was the first wicket to fall in the fourth over when he was bowled for 13 by Charlton after making a promising start.
Pressure further mounted when Harry Robertson lasted two balls and then Ben Harford was bowled in successive deliveries by Vale.
The very next over Charlton took his second wicket by removing Roberts to leave Town reeling on 34-4.
Jacob Norton was joined in the middle order by Max Collins who both looked assured very quickly.
They steadied the Town innings and began to pick up the run rate, Norton in particular making a high impact start with three quick boundaries whilst Collins took singles at every opportunity.
Collins and Norton shared an unbroken partnership of 63 until Norton retired on 28 not out, having rescued Town from a perilous position.
Collins was joined by George Scott, who added to Bourne's growing misery when he despatched two huge sixes to take the score past the 100 mark.
Collins retired on 28 and finished in emphatic style with two glorious boundaries.
He was shortly followed by Scott on 25 not out.
Town failed to use up all their overs as the last few wickets fell as the tail-enders tried to push the total higher – they were all out for 123, a formidable target given their earlier loss of wickets.
Bourne started their innings in nervy fashion with George Scott taking Bentley's wicket with his third ball when Robertson held on to a great catch. Max Collins struck too in his first over, trapping Charlton leg before leaving Bourne two down with just nine runs on the board.
Scott and Collins were proving difficult to score off and by the close of the sixth over the score only amounted to 12. During that over Collins further dented Bourne confidence by taking two more wickets.
He bowled Cowman for two runs and then Bourne skipper Vale lasted just three balls when he trapped him leg before.
Bourne never recovered from this early onslaught and headed into the 10th over four wickets down for just 21 runs.
Rachel Richardson took up the challenge too and produced a wicket in her third over and only conceded 10 runs from her four-over spell.
Oliver Carrick and Norton picked up wickets too and conceded few runs. Only Fawcett for Bourne looked like troubling the bowlers as he picked up a deserved 22 runs before being caught behind by Harford off Roberts.
Bourne reached a commendable 69 runs off 20 overs helped by 24 extras.
Uppingham ran out clear winners by a margin of 54 runs.
Skipper Harry Robertson collected the Under 13s Druce Shield from Ian Howes, the match sponsor, representing TMSB Exiles CC.
