AN all Rutland final is the dream ticket after Uppingham Town and Rutland Rangers both made it the semi-final draw of the Peterborough & District league's PFA Senior Cup on Saturday.
Uppingham pulled off an impressive win, beating league leaders Whittlesey in their quarter final, while current cup holders Rangers cruised past Alconbury 3-0 away from home.
Town's was the surprise result of the round with Uppingham boss Richard Kendrick saying: "Our win would be a shock to some people but not to me. I know we can beat anyone on our day."
The semi-final draw is still to be made but Kendrick hopes for either Netherton Utd or Ramsey Town in the next round, and then he hopes a dream final against county rivals Rutland Rangers.
"I've not beaten them since they joined this division," said Kendrick. "For local football it would be nice to play Rutland Rangers, and a good place to put our record against them right."
Town knocked their visitors out with a goals from Martin Turiccki and Dylan Oliver either side of half time and Kendrick said his team should have put more past a side that were top of the Peterborough & District Premier League going to the weekend's matches. Deeping Sports now sit top after their weekend win in the league.
Oliver's winner came with about 20 minutes of play left and the striker had other chances to extend Uppingham's winning margin.
Kendrick added: "We should have put ourselves ahead earlier. We could have had four easily. With a little bit of luck Dylan could have had a hat-trick.
"We controlled the game from start to finish and they never made our keeper work except for the penalty."
Whittlesey opened the scoring from the spot on 22 minutes and Kendrick had no complaints about the referee's decision.
He was more frustrated that his side hadn't scored by that point saying: "We should have been two up by that time."
Turiccki, who was deployed deeper than usual, levelled on the half hour with a fine strike before Oliver's second half winner.
Uppingham had ended 2009 in hot form and the month-long break due to snow came at the wrong time for Town.
Kendrick said: "My main concern had been the long lay-off but we played well.
"It's one of the games I have enjoyed most this season. It was a terrific win for the boys and there was a real buzz. It was like old times.
"This proves we are capable of beating the top sides and I hope it will be a platform for a strong second half to the league season."
