GOLF: 90 Ninety golf set to emulate Twenty20 cricket success
Rutland County Golf Club has come up with a new shortened version of the sport aimed at rivalling the popularity of Twenty20 cricket.
The first ever 90 Ninety Junior Golf Tournament will be on Friday August 1. Competitors will play nine holes in 90 minutes in a knockout match play format.
Victors go through to the next round until the last two players contest the final and the inaugural trophy. Finalists will have played a maximum of five rounds of nine holes with the final being played over the same distance.
Players eliminated in the opening two rounds will go into a losers' plate event with a second chance to win silverware.
The competition is open to all under 18 golfers with a handicap between seven and 13.
It costs £12 to enter which will include a bacon roll and a drink on arrival, a barbecue from 3pm and an invitation to the awards ceremony afterwards.
The 90 Ninety tournament has been generously sponsored by businessman Darren Laughton, who owns the Stretton-based company Ideal Shopfitters, who also provided a £500 cheque to be donated to the overall winner's desired charity.
Anyone interested in taking part should telephone Rutland County Golf Club on (01780) 460330, extension 1, and speak to Maurice or Tracy to book a place.
