MOTOCROSS: Oakham club celebrates 30 years of racing
Oakham Motocross Club celebrated 30 years of off-road motorcycle racing with a meeting on Sunday in perfect race conditions.
Over 50 of its current members from the Rutland, Grantham and Melton area were joined by 30 of the riders who had raced in the club over the last three decades.
The club was also proud to host a round of the Amateur Motorcycling Association Veterans' class for over 35-year-old riders.
In the local club classes Nick Gray, from Melton, shone in the under 14 races with two first places and a third in his opening ride, ahead of Shaun Yaxley who was not far behind Nick.
A fine performance from newcomer to the sport Conor Witcomb resulted in an overall third place.
The very competitive class for older junior riders was a tight affair between Ben Parsons and Mitch Nichols. Despite Mitch's last race win he was pipped at the post in the overall standings by just two points with Martin Dalby finishing in third overall.
Oakham-based Tom Gilbert nudged himself just ahead of Melton's Luke Knight in the class for senior standard older riders with local plumber Ben Cox coming in third place in a race class that is very close and highly competitive.
Ryan Pridmore has been dogged in recent times with injuries, but that was not an issue for him when racing in the Expert class as he powered home with two race wins and a third place in the last race to coast home well ahead of second placed Chris Rose.
Third spot in the Expert class went to Steve Whitehead, one of the Whitehead brothers who dominated the sport in the East Midlands in the 1980s.
The other brothers in this famous family were allowed 'guest' rides in the older riders classes and both Bill and Peter Whitehead showed they still possess that style and skill that put them at the top of the sport.
In the special class for old members the over 45s class was dominated by Melton riders with David Holland getting the better of his friend Ross Marshall by just two points, despite 48-year-old Ross's last race win. Andrew Horsefield came home third ahead of super fit Dave Wescomb ,who at 52 rode his 25-year-old bike to a fantastic fourth finish.
Simon Thornton and Dave Wescomb are two of four riders who rode in the club 30 years ago, the others being 71-year-old Frank Hutchinson – who showed everyone you are not too old – and club chairman Terry King.
In the 30-45 years of age class for older members, Mark Joyce showed a clean pair of heals in all three races to show why he was once a competitor in the National Championship. He was followed home in all three races by a famous name in Rutland for Motorcycling, Andy Nourish.
Ex-policeman and a very young 40 year old Dean Gardiner came in third overall. Ex Hambleton resident Darren Blackwell came in fourth place.
In the AMAV class Coalville's Chris Wainwright used his local track knowledge race to three victories
The next race meeting is on August 3 at Sproxton.
