Pupils from Cottesmore Primary School are celebrating after winning the first ever county judo competition for schoolchildren.
The event was the culmination of a six-month coaching programme in the sport in conjunction with the Vale Judo Club in Oakham.

Around 370 youngsters in 14 schools were involved initially before the best were selected to form squads for the Rutland primary schools' tournament.

They competed against each other on Saturday at the club, which is a regional centre of excellence.

Around 50 pupils were put into categories depending on their weight, with no more than four children in each. They all fought one another to decide the gold, silver and bronze medal positions.

Points were awarded to individual schools throughout the competition with Cottesmore declared overall team winners.

There were also special trophies given for the throw of the day - to Kimberley Forsythe (English Martyrs School) and John Lloyd (Southfields) - and for the 'spirit of judo' - to Alice Hardy (Ketton) and Josh Cuff (Ryhall).

Junior referees from the club officiated alongside national referees and timekeepers with British Judo Organisation qualifications.

The scheme was co-ordinated by Chris Thomas, the Rutland schools' partnership development manager, and Mike Newton, a senior coach at the Vale club. They plan to extend the number of children taking part next year.

Chris said: "I am delighted by the result of this programme and I am encouraged to see so many girls participating in the sport."

Mike added: "This club-school link has encouraged around 60 children to join our club, as well as some of their brothers, sisters and parents.

"We now have the largest membership base of any judo club in the East Midlands."

Further information on Vale Judo Club can be found at www.valejudo.org.uk and club members wishing to see photos of the competition will be given online access if they email valejudo@tiscali.co.uk
