UPPINGHAM Town were crowned Twenty20 cricket champions of Rutland on Friday evening.
The town side beat Ketton by nine runs in the final of the competition, which was played at the neutral venue of Oakham's Lime Kilns.
Uppingham batted first and set Ketton a target of 104 - a score which looked achievable on a pitch with a fast outfield. But a tight final over, yielding just one run for one wicket, saw Uppingham home.
Town had maintained their policy from earlier rounds of fielding a young side with a team of under-25s backed by the experience of Mark Cox and Adi Salt. Several players were only teenagers.
Captain for the game was Jamie Dumford, who together with Cox set Uppingham on their way, Cox hitting 36 and Dumford 18 before being given out to a harsh lbw decision.
Uppingham should have scored more in their innings but their run rate dropped as three middle order wickets (Clarke, Armstrong and Scott) fell cheaply.
Ketton's replay started strongly, matching Uppingham's run rate in the early overs but Uppingham's fielding was strong and bowling from Stuart Lambie in particular, taking three for 18, undid the Ketton innings.
Ketton needed nine off the final over but the best bowled over of the match saw Uppingham home.
After accepting the trophy - previous winners were Oakham 2007 and Market Overton 2008 - Dumford said the game was won by his fielders.
He said: "Our fielding was fabulous. We held all the catches. Ben Collins took a great catch, I took a good catch but really it was a good team effort."
He admitted he wasn't sure that 103 would be enough to test Ketton and added: "It looked a bit shy and thought we would 120 or 130 but we lost wickets."
For Ketton Smith returned impressive bowling figures of 4 for 14, while captain Dave McDonald claimed two wickets for 13 off his four overs.
Openers Christian Durrant (23) and Wilson (22), who struck three fours and a hefty six were the pick of Ketton's bowlers.
