UPPINGHAM Town’s 1st team won the Rutland Twenty20 final at Oakham’s Lime Kilns yesterday evening.

The firsts beat the club’s own second team in a low scoring game that survived the recent weather thanks to excellent work by Oakham’s ground staff.

The seconds batted first and struggled to score runs on the damp, slow wicket. Dave Fish opened the innings and top scored with just 13 runs as the seconds lost five wickets for just 34 runs in a bowler-dominated game.

Jack Salt (11) and Michael ‘Billy’ Beaver (10) wagged the tail as Uppingham seconds were bowled out for just 69 runs.

Alex Ashwin (3 wicket for 14) and Danny Dumford (2 for 5) were the pick of the six bowlers used though all the bowlers were economical.

In reply Uppingham firsts faired no better as Chris Howe (4 for 9) ripped through the top order taking the first four wickets for just 30 runs, and an excellent catch to remove top scorer Max Collins (17) as the firsts slumped to 47 runs for 5 wickets.

Danny Dumford (11) was the last wicket to fall, caught superbly by Fish, and that brought Alex ‘Smasher’ Ashwin to the crease, and a six and a four from him brought the game to a quick conclusion with Uppingham firsts winning in the 17th over.

Men of the match were Alex Ashwin for the first team and Chris Howe for the seconds.
