Oakham United lost 3-1 to Long Buckby on Saturday in the UCL Division on one of their longest trips of the season.
The Tractor Boys travelled without a host of key platers, including goalkeeper Simon Dalton, centre back Matt Holland, skipper Eddie McDonald and midfielder Richard Nelson, meaning the core of the normal side were missing.
Like Oakham, Buckby have played very little football of late because of the bad weather, but they remain one of the league’s form sides and came into the game on the back of winning their last four league games.
Oakham were undone in the first half by the Barby brothers who scored a goal each playing direct long ball football. Simon opened the scoring for the hosts after 17 minutes and just two minutes later his sibling Ricky added a second.
The long grass and heavy pitch made it almost impossible for Oakham to get their neat passing game going and they failed to change to plan B early enough.
Luck was not on their side either as Adam Rothery was flagged offside just before the break after he put the ball in the back of the net from a goalmouth scramble.
It was more of the same in the second half and pressure from Bucks resulted in Manny Salumu finding the back of the net in the 68th minute.
United scored a consolation goal in the 84th minute through in-demand top scorer Lewis Leekie.
Seb Archer-Fern spread the ball wide to the industrious Robbie Pearce, who worked hard all day in central midfield, and he delivered a perfect touch cross to Leckie who took the ball down and fired in.
Oakham are away at Raunds Town on Saturday who sit in 11th place in the league, three places below United in eighth.
