Stamford Lions had to settle for a point in the PDFL Division One on Saturday after a rain drenched game away to Warboys ended in a 3-3 draw.

Stamford made a promising start when Sean O’Donnell fired them into the lead after just 12 minutes with a fierce strike.

Then on the half hour mark Ryan Brown robbed the ball away from the out rushing keeper but saw his goal-bound effort cleared off the line by a defender.

As the rain continued to lash down the pitch soon cut up very badly and the football was effected.

The passing game could no longer be deployed and that suited the home side.

An equalising goal was slotted in just before half time when the Lions failed to clear their lines and a ball across the box was neatly slotted past keeper Jimmy Russon.

Jack Travers restored the lead for the Stamford side five minutes into the second half when he heading home a Brown cross.

Travers then had a great chance to extend the lead but as his shot went wide.

With 20 minutes to play the referee surprised both sets of players by awarding a controversial penalty after Sean Kelly’s slide tackle on the edge of the area appeared to sweep the ball cleanly away from the attacker’s foot but not in the eyes of the referee.

The penalty was dispatched and the scores were once again level.

If the penalty stunned the Lions they were left shell shocked only minutes later as a deep cross was lofted into the area and a goal mouth scramble followed. The ball was bundled past Russon to give the home side the lead.

With ten minutes left on the clock Travers played a through ball for Brown to chase, as he collected the pass he raced away from his marker and drilled his shot past the keeper to draw level and set-up a thrilling finale to the game.

With only a minute left Sam Rayner unleashed a shot which struck the arm of the defender, despite desperate pleas from the Lions the penalty appeals were waved away and both teams finished level.
