Oakham United were beaten 2-0 away at league leaders Peterborough Sports on Friday night.

Peterborough Sports are a different beast to anyone else in the UCL Division One.

They may have shown they are not altogether invincible of late when they lost their first two games of the season but they have so much quality in their side that promotion and the division title is now merely a formality.

No opposition visiting Sports have come away with even a point this season and the Tractor Boys joined that long list of beaten foes at the weekend.

Sports’ have the division’s two top scorers in Avelino Viera (40) and Karl Gibbs (32), with Jordan Macloud in sixth place on the goal scoring charts with 21 as well. That’s just a place and six goals behind United start Lewis Leckie in fifth.

If that wasn’t enough the Peterborough club brought in striker Josh Moreman from Evo-Stik Division One side Spalding United midway through the season and Stamford AFC attacking midfielder Dan Clements.

It was the two men with higher league experience who finally unlocked a well organised and stubborn Oakham defence seven minutes before the break.

Clements delivered an inviting cross from the right flank for Moreman to head home.

Before that Oakham had created a couple of chances of their own. Ben Easson had a shot saved by home keeper Lea Jordan and Matt Holland had a header comfortably saved as well.

However between those efforts the Tractor Boys managed to concede a penalty when Richard Nelson brought down Dan Bucciero.

But the heavily strapped Simon Dalton in goal, who is playing through the pain barrier with an ankle injury, saved Lewis Webb’s spot kick. And it was not his only good save of the match.

So the mighty Sports had to make do with a 1-0 lead at half time.

After the break Clements was close to adding his name to the scoresheet but he put a header from a David Cobb cross just off target.

Oakham were hanging on and it took until the 90th minute for Sports to put the game to bed. Vieira, who had earlier crashed a header against the crossbar, stole the ball away from the Oakham defence before finding substitute Jordan Macleod who jinked past a defender before beating Dalton with a well placed shot.

In added time Macleod had a chance to put some gloss on the score but he pushed a shot across the face of goal.

Considering Oakham lost 5-1 to Peterborough at Sterling Meadows back in November it was a highly improved performance which shows the progression this team has made in the last four months.

Oakham now sit 11th in the UCL Division One, they host fourth place Potton United on Saturday next, 3pm ko.
