Stamford AFC recorded a much needed 3-0 victory away at Ilkeston last night (Tuesday) to edge them closer to escaping the drop zone in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier Division.
The Daniels opened the scoring in the third minute through Lee Beeson, who stuck the ball home after the towering Paul Malone headed on a long throw-in from Jon Challinor.
On the quarter hour mark Greg Smith doubled Stamford’s lead from the penalty spot.
And then 11 minutes before the break Malone headed home a corner from Jake Duffy to give the travelling side a comfortable lead at half time.
Ilkeston had a lot of possession in the second half and Stamford were tiring, but their cause was helped in the 74th minute when Michael Williams was shown a second yellow card for dissent.
The win moves Stamford up one place to 21st in the league, and they are now two points from safety, although because of their -28 goal difference they would actually need three points to move clear of Mickleover Sports, who have played one game less, and Whitby Town who have two games in hand.
