Ladies scale Heights go top of table

RUTLAND County Ladies are top of the table after winning their second county league fixture, away against Humberstone Heights, 2½-½.

Lady Captain, Bridget Yardley and Ann Milsom won 2 and 1, Meg Tasker and Carol Westcotte won 3 and 2, Suzanne Huxley and Jackie Cole halved.

l AIDEN Staunton made a welcome return to the club’s competition scene, topping the June Midweek medal

Staunton swept around the course in just 68 shots to claim the best gross score by a full six shots, ahead of Russell Aust, Michael Pressick and current club champion Ollie Freckingham all on 74.

Freckingham will have to up his performance to stand a chance of securing a seventh championship victory this weekend in what promises to be an interesting event.

Results: 1st A Staunton 68-2 = 66; 2nd T Dunn 75-9 = 66; 3rd R Aust 74-5 = 69.

l RUTLAND County’s B Team overcame a plucky Melton Mowbray outfit at home with the match hinging on the final pairing of Chris Palmer and Gerry McIntyre who thundered in with a fine 6 and 4 win to close off the match 3½ to 2½.

Andy Vernon came in often enough to help Phil Drury win 2 and 1; Dave Rippin and Rod Goss won 2 up; Deggie Palmer and Mike Powell lost 2 and 1; Martyn Gatehouse and Ollie Huxley lost 3 and 2, and Craig Allen and Bob Ambrose halved.

l ALAN Kydd won Rutland County Seniors’ June Stableford first division with a score of 40 points after countback. Ian Barron was second with 40, and Barry Cheshire on with 37 points.

Division two winner with 34 points was Peter Aitkens. Runner-up with 32 points was Ron Snape, beating Ann Sargeson into third on countback.
