THE last-minute pairing of Kay Ropson and Bob Beverley won Greetham Valley’s Mixed Open by the narrowest of margins at the weekend.

Bob joined Kay when her planned playing partner pulled out due to illness and the new duo instantly clicked, fending off the challenge of players from 24 different clubs with a score of 38 points, and pipping fellow Greetham pair George Grant and Anne McCulloch on countback.

With the men playing of white tees, and ladies off red on the Lakes course, the competition format was pairs betterball with ladies playing off the men’s card.

Competition was tight with the next two pairs, Jordan Burdall and Glen Gorse player Harriet Hewitt, and Greetham vice-captain Trevor Smith and Burghley Park’s Hanna Vaughan just one point behind with Jordan and Harriet taking third on countback.

Club Captains Jim Wheeler and Eileen Pare were delighted by the day which raised £215 for the Evergreen Care Trust. They thanked Joan and Denis Millington for organising the event, and Chris and John Harper for looking after the starting and halfway houses.

l GREETHAM Valley seniors extended their unbeaten run to seven with a 6-2 win over visitors Whetstone.

Keith Stafford, playing his first match with the seniors, and his partner George Cooper who is 84, won their game by six and four. Valley were due to host Burghley Park this week.

l JOHN Taylor won the seniors’ June Stableford on another rainy day on the Valley Course with a score of 38.

John won despite a blob on the first hole, and a further blob on the 17th but his 38 was enough to win division one.

Eight-handicapper Neil Lowndes came second with 38. Another eight-handicapper, Ken Porter was third on countback, beating Keith Goodwin and Tim Howlett. All three scored 36.

The best score of the day went to Chris Dawson in division two. He came in with a massive 43 points with a birdie on the tricky par three 16th. Peter Palmer was second with 34 points. Mel Clark took third on countback with 33.

l SCORING was tight in the June midweek Stableford with the top three all coming in with 41 points. Eleven-handicapper Geoff Williams took the win on countback, ahead of 16-handicapper Tyrone Moreno-Melgar, second, and Peter Bagshaw, off eight in third.

North Luffenham GC

DESPITE awful weather almost 40 golfers braved the elements for the annual Captain’s Charity Day at North Luffenham Golf Club.

More than £600 was raised for Vista during the event, with Tom Little taking first place in the gents’ competition and Market Harborough Golf Club’s Gill Wooldridge winning the ladies’.

Results: Gents - 1st Tom Little (playing off 11) 40 points; 2nd Alan Swindley (off 8) 39. Ladies - 1st Gill Wooldridge 29 points; 2nd Judy Cade (Burghley Park) 25.

The winning score in the team event was 91 scored by the quartet of Tom Little, Mike Seabrook, Bill Sharman and Gill Wooldridge. Runners-up on countback, with a score of 86, were David Tubb, Don Lambert, Ailsa Dempster and Gordon Knox (as ghost player).

Gordon Knox and Jim Ashworth were nearest the pin on the par three 3rd and 16th holes respectively, with Julie Lambert getting nearest the pin for the ladies. The Gents longest drive was won by Tom Little, and Carolyn Hipwell for the ladies.

l LUFFENHAM’S mid-week medal for June was cancelled due to the weather, and the Sunday medal had an unusually low number of competitors.

Braving the elements, in first place was John Fursdon with an impressive nett 67. Runner-up was Tom Little scoring 71 (off 11), closely followed by Dan Freckingham with 73 (off 13).

l NORTH Luffenham Seniors lost narrowly 3½-2½at Stoke Albany with the game only decided on the 17th green of the final game.

Results: Malcolm Hird/Alan Barwell halved; Stan Smith/John Nicholls won 4 & 2, Chris Lee/Alan Swindley lost 2 down; Peter Lemmon/Alan Cassapi lost 6 & 5; Dave Scotchmer/Dave Woodcock won 2 & 1; Peter Christmas/John Murphy lost 2 & 1.

Rutland Water

A GOOD turnout played Rutland Water Seniors’ June Stableford was played in good weather and some excellent results.

Results: 1st D Mee 46 points and on countback; 2nd P Friend, 3rd T Beck and 4th T Wright, all on 36 points.

Rutland’s A team beat Charnwood 5½-2½ at home on Thursday with wins from N Vance, P Tomson, W Salisbury, B Stephens and R Pengelly, a half from S McTaggart and losses for M Smith and P Hibbitt.
