Young guns stun league leaders

A RUTLAND County team with only two players over the age of 23 stunned top-of the league Park Hill with a 5½-2½ victory at home last week.

Notably neither of the two senior players managed a win with Deggie Palmer losing 7 and 5, and Eric Cooper losing 1 down.

However, showing the more experienced players a shot or two, Jordan Paylor won 1 up, Russ Aust won 4 and 2, Micheal Pressick won 3 and 2, Ollie Huxley halved, Chris Palmer won 4 and 2, Ollie Freckingham won 2 and 1.

The A team’s survival in the league was the pre-season target and this is almost certainly the case now.

l IN the Summer Doubles Knockout Neil Paylor and Pete Siciliano fell victim to the Jekyll and Hyde pairing of Roger Overton and Eddie Broadhurst in a marathon that finished on the 21st hole.

Despite being three-up early in the match, Paylor watched his partner Siciliano, horseshoe his putt on the tricky third hole to lose the tie.

l COUNTY’s B team came away from Thorney with a creditable 4–2 victory.

Skipper Dave Rippin chose his partner wisely and he and Andy Vernon recorded a fine 4 and 2 win. Alongisde their victory, Pete Siciliano and Josh Paylor won 3 and 2, Mike Powell and Kev Moxham lost 3 and 2, Bob Ambrose and Jordan Paylor were trounced 6 and 5, Martyn Gatehouse and Gerry McIntyre won 3 and 2, Deggie Palmer and Pete Maksymiw completed the win with a 2 and 1 victory.

l RUTLAND County’s seniors Inter-Club match at home to Belton Woods was drawn four 4-4.

l COUNTY’S seniors three from two competition was won by John Brunning, Robin Douglas and Alistair Scott with 75 points.

One outstanding stroke came from Bob Goddard, who struck his third shot 70 yards from the hole, the ball bounced twice on the green, hit the pin and fell into the hole.
