Empingham were well beaten by second place Houghton-on-the-Hill in the Grantham and Melton League Division One on Sunday.

The Rutland side were beaten by eight wickets after they failed to put together a considerable total having been put in to bat. Empingham were all out for 134 in the 37th over.

Freddie Turner opened the innings with a decent start, making 25 before he was caught lbw by Luke Mitchell. But he was beaten back to the paillion by Baz Sharp who only stuck around long enough to make 1 before a stray shot was taken by James Cross off the bowling of Packwood.

Skipper Tom Cooper wasn’t around an awful much longer, making just eight. And that was the story of Empingham’s innings.

No one kicked on to make a dangerous score and if it hadn’t been for 25 from number seven in the order Matt Denny and 17 not out from last man in Dave Mckevitt the measly total would have been much smaller.

Houghton’s Luke Mitchell finished with the best bowling figures with 5-21 after ripping through the tail.

Houghton were always favourite to win after Empingham had struggled with the bat and they only lost two wickets on their way to 138-2, which they reached in the 25th over. Houghton opener Robbie Scudamore struck the highest score of the game with 47 runs before Danny O’Kane caught and bowled him. Mckevitt took the other wicket, that of Ben Garne, for 19. A knock of 46 not out from Will Hunt secure the win.
