Rutland League Division Two leaders Ketton 1st XI were beaten by 91 runs to county rivals Oakham 1st XI on Sunday.
Ketton won the toss and elected field and it looked to be a good decision as Oakham’s opener Will Bell was dismissed for just two runs when he was caught by Josh Gallimore off the bowling of Shakir Mahmood.
However Oakham put together a steady innings to get themselves into a winning position. Sean Cowley added 18 before he too was caught, this time Ben Bryant taking the catch from Andrew Barringer’s bowling. Charlie Baker (46) was four short of his half centre before being caught and bowled by Bryant who then took account of Josh Makey for 26. But Neil Southern game to the crease at number six in the order and stuck around to steady the ship. He finished on 71 not out having dispatched the Ketton bowlers for six fours and two sixes.
The final score after 45 overs was 236-7.
Ketton got off to a decent start with opening batsman Josh Gallimore hitting 29 and Ben Bryant making 48 but Oakham bowler Graeme North had a good day with the ball.
He took the scalp of both men on his way to a five wicket haul, finishing with 5-21. His exploits were almost matched by Simon Foulds who took 4-34, helping to take the tail out for minimal runs as Ketton collapsed to finish 145 all out in the 42nd over.
The loss drops Ketton down to second in the table but they are still tied on points with new leaders Ufford Park. Oakham are fourth.
