A paraplegic sailor who is due to compete in Holland this weekend has had to postpone a sponsored swim planned to help fund the trip.

Christine Spray, 56, from Ketton, was paralysed from the waist down after a horse riding accident 16 years ago but still competes in a number of different sports.

Her latest passion, sailing, will see Christine compete in the Hansa World Championships in Medemblik, Holland, this weekend.

To help fund the trip, Christine had planned a sponsored 500 metre swim in Rutland Water last month but, because of the low water temperature, the challenge was cut short.

She said: “The swim was organised by an expert who plans triathlons and she said the temperature, which was 13 degrees centigrade, was too low for me to safely complete 500 metres.

“Sadly, I only managed to swim around 80 metres, so I am intending to reschedule the challenge for July.”

Christine will compete in Holland alongside a team of fellow sailors from Rutland Sailability.
